Bienvenue dans le repère d’El Zorro où se mélange toute la musique de Cuba. Certains me diront encore (malheureusement) « El Zorro » avec le sergent Garcia. Non El Zorro c’est plutôt ça :

El Zorro c’est la rencontre de deux hommes, deux musiciens, deux continents différents mais qui battent aux mêmes rythmes, ceux de la musique et de Cuba ; l’un est né dedans (Gustavo) l’autre est tombé dedans (Martin) mais au final comme ils le disent si bien « somos hermanos » (nous sommes frères). 

El Zorro c’est aussi et surtout le pilier et le fondateur du groupe, le surnom de Martin Richard Lenher : pianiste, tromboniste, compositeur, producteur. Né en Suisse, il y étudie le jazz, ainsi que le trombone au conservatoire de Winterthur. En 1989 et dans les années qui suivent, il devient professeur de trombone et de théorie musicale à l’école de jazz et à l’université de Zurich, ainsi que directeur du département de Jazz du « Zurich Conservatory Classical and Jazz ».

En même temps il se passionne pour la musique cubaine, joue déjà dans différents groupes. Mais c’est quand il part en 1995 à Cuba pour parfaire ses connaissances que tout change et qu’il en revient avec un projet phénoménal : « El Zorro ».

Ce projet n’aurait pu se faire d’ailleurs sans une autre personne : Gustavo Carlos Duran Anaya « El Buda ». C’est à Santiago de Cuba et à la Havane qu’il y apprend la musique. Tromboniste, il joua d’abord pour l’Orquesta Sinfonica del Oriente et fut membre d’autres groupes dont Los Tainos, Los Kinin, Chan Chan ainsi que les mythiques Sur Caribe et Elio Reve y su Charangon.

De l’amitié entre ces deux hommes, naît alors le groupe « El Zorro ». Dés lors ils ont l’intelligence de mêler les compositions de Martin Richard Lenher, leurs musiques et leurs savoirs aux plus grandes voix de Cuba.

En effet, l’incomparable Mayito Rivera, musicien mais aussi chanteur d’un des plus grands groupes de Cuba « Los Van Van » participe à presque chaque album. Il chantera entre autre « Volando », « Te Fuiste », « Somos Hermanos », « Frio Frio », « Cuarenta y seis », « Llego,  Llego ».

Angel Bonne, quant à lui, n’est pas en reste non plus. Musicien, saxophoniste, chanteur, il rejoindra également les « Van Van », participera à d’autres projets comme avec Pupy ou Sur Caribe et intégrera lui aussi l’équipe d’El Zorro. Il y chante « Para », « Te doy me mano », « El Fenomeno », « El Sapo », « Mi Tierra », « La Rumba Te Llama »…

D’autres chanteurs célèbres viennent s’y ajouter. Il y a Roberto Pulido Gonzales (Charanga Forever) avec « Ay, Como Me Sube », Osdalgia (Bamboleo) avec « El Zorro », « Lloro », Nelson Manuel avec « Relajate », « Maria », mais aussi Evelio Jaz Ramos sur l’album « Somos Hermanos ». Entourés de tous ses musiciens de talent, ils nous font rentrer dans leur univers.

En effet, ils nous entraînent sur les rives de Cuba, à la Havane et dans le pays tout entier à travers leur amitié aux sons de la Timba, du Cha Cha Cha, du Son, du Boléro, de la Salsa, du Danzon, du Guaguanco et de la Rumba.

Les textes sont principalement écrits par Martin Richard Lenher et les sujets sont divers et variés. Et bien qu’il s’agisse d’un groupe cubano-suisse, Cuba est là, dans toute sa complexité autant dans la pauvreté, le désespoir, la délinquance (« Oh La Habana ») que dans la joie et l’amitié (« Somos Hermanos », « El Zorro », « Te doy me mano »), ainsi que dans l’amour et la religion.

Il y évoque alors la joie de vivre là -bas le rhum, le soleil, l’amour, la rumba, l’amitié, la vie et ses difficultés. Il y invoque les dieux de la religion Yoruba : entre autre Elegua (dieu des chemins, patron des croisements et gardien des portes) et Orula (devin et gardien de la connaissance).

Teintée de Timba mais pas seulement, leur musique fuse, leur musique est éclectique. Le Cha Cha Cha (« Mi Tierra ») côtoie aussi bien le Boléro (« Te Lo Juro ») que la Timba (« Frio Frio ») ainsi que la salsa romantica (« Sobrenaturalo »).

De leur premier album « La Vida Entera » jusqu’au dernier « Ay, Como Me Sube », on note une évolution certaine. En effet, influencés certainement par les classiques et les grands groupes de Cuba, ils ont su se démarquer et trouver leur style, leur propre rythme et leur propre musique : la patte « El Zorro ».

De la réunion de personnalités diverses, ils ont su créer un groupe à part, c’est ce qui fait leur différence, leur richesse, une complémentarité de chaque instant.

Myriam : La première question qui me vient à l’esprit, c’est pourquoi El Zorro ? Pourquoi ce surnom ?

Martin Richard Lenher : Lorsque je me suis rendu pour la deuxième fois à Cuba, j’avais quelques compositions originales dans mes bagages. L’idée était de présenter à Gustavo et à d’autres musiciens cubains mes nouvelles compositions. J’étais curieux de connaître leurs opinions. Une grande partie de ces musiciens cubains ne pouvait pas croire qu’un type suisse, comme moi, ai pu écrire ces airs-là. Donc, ils m’ont appelé « Zorro » (le renard). Ce qui signifie que je suis un garçon futé, intelligent et habile. Vu que j’avais hérité de ce surnom typiquement Cubain « El Zorro », j’ai donc décidé de l’utiliser pour ce projet suisso-cubain.

Myriam : D’où vous vient votre passion pour la musique cubaine ?

Martin Richard Lenher : Au cours de mes études de musique, j’ai commencé à jouer de la musique latine et de la Salsa. Et bien sûr, à un moment donné, j’ai découvert la richesse de la musique cubaine. La salsa cubaine (appelée Timba) est riche de la culture musicale cubaine, comme le Danzon, le Son, le Guaguanco (la rumba cubaine), la Santeria (les rythmes religieux). Elle est aussi mélangée à des éléments nouveaux de différents styles musicaux tels que le Jazz, le Funk, le Rock, la Pop et le Hip Hop. Cette combinaison rend la Timba très complexe et intéressante. Je n’ai jamais vu un pays avec un tel niveau de compréhension de la complexité musicale comme Cuba. Du bébé à la grand-mère, l’ensemble du pays danse sur la Timba, et la Timba (je vous parle en connaisseur) n’est pas une oeuvre musicale facile.

Myriam : Quels sont les groupes cubains qui vous ont le plus influencés ou qui vous inspirent le plus ?

Martin Richard Lenher : Au début, il y eut le magnifique groupe Los Van Van, plus tard, la Charanga Habanera (timba Creasy-bands) et Manolin « El Médico de la Salsa ». Egalement Paulito F.G. mais pas seulement en hommage au chanteur Paulito, en hommage aussi aux deux des plus grands arrangeurs de la musique cubaine : Juan Manuel Ceruto et Joaquín Betancourt. Enfin j’aime aussi Issac Delgado, Manolito, Bamboleo et Maravillas de Florida. Pour le moment, je ne suis pas vraiment influencé par un groupe cubain, mais je suis devenu un grand fan du groupe « Guaco » du Venezuela.

Myriam : Même si on connaît un peu votre histoire, racontez nous votre rencontre avec Gustavo Carlos Duran Anaya « El Buda ».

Martin Richard Lenher : La première fois où j’ai voyagé pendant 4 semaines à Cuba, j’ai passé 2 semaines à Santiago. Chaque matin, j’ai eu là, quelques leçons de percussions. Pour ne pas perdre la main (pour l’entretien) j’ai aussi pratiqué le trombone et pour cela je jouais sur une terrasse. Donc tout le monde pouvait m’écouter jouer dans le quartier. Un matin, Frankis un tromboniste cubain est passé dans la rue, histoire de savoir qui diable jouait ici. Plus tard Frankis m’a présenté Gustavo. Tous les deux, Frankis et Gustavo jouaient dans l’orchestre symphonique de Santiago. J’ai passé des moments agréables et intéressants avec Gustavo, et ainsi nous sommes devenus amis.

Myriam : Comment vous est venue l’idée de créer un groupe ? Et d’y associer de grands chanteurs tels que Mayito Rivera et Angel Bonne ?

Martin Richard Lenher : Depuis 8 ans, j’ai une formation suisse d’El Zorro. Cela signifie que je joue, principalement en Suisse, avec des musiciens suisses et cubains (vivant en Suisse). En novembre 2009, le Festival « Aqui Cuba » m’a fait une offre très intéressante pour jouer au festival et inviter Angel Bonne en guest star. Nous avons eu beaucoup de plaisir à jouer quelques concerts avec Angel, et nous avons eu beaucoup de succès alors nous avons décidé d’organiser d’autres concerts au mois de juillet 2010. Nous allons jouer en Suisse, en Pologne, en Italie et peut-être à nouveau en France. Nous verrons ce que l’avenir nous réserve.

Myriam : En tant que parolier, d’où vous vient votre inspiration ? Avez-vous des thèmes privilégiés ?

Martin Richard Lenher : Très bonne question, je ne sais vraiment pas. Parfois, j’entends une phrase, une partie du texte d’une chanson et après, je pense, « oh cela pourrait être un thème sympa pour une nouvelle chanson. » Une autre fois, je regardais les nouvelles à la télé et j’ai vu des gens se battre pour des raisons religieuses. Après cela, il fut évident pour moi que je devais écrire une chanson pour dénoncer cette folie. Cela a donné la chanson «Para! ». Le plus populaire est le thème de l’amour dans mes chansons. La relation entre un homme et une femme est encore un thème important dans la vie de chacun.

Myriam : A votre avis en quoi votre musique sort-elle du lot ?

Martin Richard Lenher : La différence vient de mon héritage culturel. J’ai grandi en écoutant toutes sortes de musiques à la radio. La Suisse n’a pas vraiment sa propre musique. Hormis certains yodels, mais, sérieusement, oubliez cela. La Suisse n’a pas d’origine ethnique. Nous sommes issus de différentes nations.

Je tiens donc à dire que je ne suis pas enfermé dans un type particulier de musique. La plupart des compositeurs cubains pensent d’abord au groove (à l’aspect rythmique) et ensuite à la mélodie et à l’harmonie. Réfléchissez à cela, « combien de succès internationaux cubains y a t-il eu dans le passé? » Bon, vous vous souvenez de quelques uns. Faites la même chose avec la musique brésilienne, et vous obtiendrez beaucoup plus de mélodies à succès. Je tiens à expliquer que les Cubains sont très forts dans les rythmes mais pas vraiment dans les mélodies. Lorsque je compose la musique, je pense indifféremment le groove, les harmonies et les mélodies en même temps, et peut-être que cela me donne des résultats différents, comme d’autres groupes cubains.

Myriam : Comment le groupe « El Zorro » est-il perçu en Suisse ?

Martin Richard Lenher : Très, très mal. Malheureusement, un « Prophète » n’a pas les honneurs dans son propre pays. J’ai beaucoup plus de succès en Italie, en Espagne, en France et en Allemagne.

Myriam : Envisagez-vous de faire une tournée en Europe ?

Martin Richard Lenher : Oui, je suis maintenant en train d’organiser quelques concerts en Juillet 2010 à nouveau avec Angel Bonne. Nous allons jouer en Suisse, en Pologne, en Italie et peut-être à nouveau en France.

Myriam : Y a-t-il un cinquième CD en préparation et si oui, peut-on s’attendre à des surprises ?

Martin Richard Lenher : Oui, il y a un 5^ième CD en préparation, et il y aura un tas de surprises. J’espère que la production sera achevée pour l’été 2010. Je sais que certains auditeurs aimeront la musique et d’autres pas. Comment puis-je le savoir? La seule chose que je sais c’est qu’il y aura de nombreuses nouveautés dans les prochains CD. Exactement comme vous l’écrivez dans la biographie, tout nouveau CD est une nouvelle étape vers une orientation nouvelle. La musique doit vivre et la musique doit changer, doit se développer, sinon, elle meurt.

Myriam : Enfin désirez vous laissez un petit message à votre public français.                     

Martin Richard Lenher : Pas vraiment un message, mais leur dire merci à tous d’écouter ma musique … (et bien sûr demander de télécharger légalement sur un portail Internet ou d’acheter les CD dans un magasin).

El Zorro

Welcome to the world of El Zorro, a melting pot of all Cuban music. Unfortunately some people wil still link the name of El Zorro to that of Sergeant Garcia, but no, El Zorro is now this:

El Zorro is the coming together of two men, of two musicians, of two continents which beat to the same rhythms, the rhythms of music and of Cuba; one was born into it (Gustavo), the other fell into it (Martin), but they sum it up so well “Somos Hermanos” (we are brothers).

El Zorro is also and most importantly the mainstay and the founder of the band, the stagename of Martin Richar Lenher: pianist, trombone player, compositor, producer. Born in Switzerland, he studied jazz in addition to the trombone at Winterthur academy of music. From 1989 on, he taught the trombone and musical theory at both the jazz school and the university in Zurich, while becoming head of the jazz department at the “Zurich Conservatory Classical and Jazz”.

At the same time he develops a passion for Cuban music, while already playing in different bands. But after a journey to Cuba in 1995 to find out more, he decides to change and comes back with the fantastic idea of forming “El Zorro”.

This could not have taken from without one man: Gustavo Carlos Duran Anaya “ El Buda”. He studied music in Santiago de Cuba and in Havana. He played the trombone first of all with the Orquesta Sinfonica del Oriente and then later with other bands, Los Tainos, Los Kinin, Chan Chan as well as with the mythic Sur Caribe and Elio Reve y su Charangon.

The “El Zorro” band was born out of the friendship of these two men. Immediately they came up with the winning idea of mixing together Martin Richar Lenher’s compositions, their music and their know-how, with the greatest voices of Cuba.

Indeed, the incomparable Mayito Rivera, musician but also singer with one of the most important Cuban bands “Los Van Van”, was present on almost every album. He performed amongst others “Volando”, “Te Fuiste”, “Somos Hermanos”, “Frio Frio”, “Cuarenta y seis”, “Llego,  Llego”.

As for Angel Bonne, he took an equal part in things. Musician, saxophone player, singer, he joined the “Van Van”, he participated in other projects with Pupy or Sur Caribe and joined the team of El Zorro. He sang “Para”, “Te doy me mano”, “El Fenomeno”, “El Sapo”, “Mi Tierra”, “La Rumba Te Llama”…

Other famous singers joined them. There was Roberto Pulido Gonzales (Charanga Forever) with “Ay, Como Me Sube”, Osdalgia (Bamboleo) with “El Zorro”, “Lloro”, Nelson Manuel with “Relajate”, “Maria”, but also Evelio Jaz Ramos on the album “Somos Hermanos”. Surrounded by all these talented musicians, they introduced us to their world.

Indeed they carry us to the shores of Cuba, to Havana and throughout the whole country on their friendship to the sounds of the Timba, the Cha Cha Cha, the Son, the Boléro, the Salsa, the Danzon, the Guaguanco and the Rumba.

The lyrics, coverning a great variety of subjects, are chiefly written by Martin Richard Lenher. Althougt the band is of Cuban/ Swiss origin, Cuba is omnipresent in all its complexity, as in its poverty, its despair, its delinquance (“Oh La Habana”) as well as in its joy and its friendship (“Somos Hermanos”, “El Zorro”, “Te Doy me mano”), and also in its love and its religion.

He evokes the joy of living there, the rum, the sunshine, love, the rumba, friendship, life and its difficulties. He invokes the gods of the Yoruba religion: among others, Elegua (the god of the pathways; patron saint of crossroads and keeper of the doors) and Orula (prophet and keeper of all knowledge).

Their music is not only reminiscent of Timba, it unites but it is also eclectic. The Cha Cha Cha (“Mi Tierra”) flirts with the Bolero (“Te Lo Juro”) and the Timba (“Frio Frio”) as well as with the salsa romantica (“Sobrenaturalo”).

A certain evolution is discernible since their first album “La Vida Entera” right up to their last “Ay, Como Me Sube”. Even though influenced without doubt by classical and well-known Cuban bands, they have managed to create their own individual style of music and rhythm, the distinctive sound of “El Zorro”.

An exceptional band has been formed through the merging of their diffferent personalities, this is what makes them different, rich and always complementary.

Myriam : The first question that comes to mind is why the stagename “El Zorro”?

Martin Richard Lenher : When I traveled the second time to Cuba, I had some original compositions in my luggage. The idea was to present Gustavo and other cuban musicians my new compositions. I was very curios about here opinions. A lot of this cuban musicians couldn’t believe that a Swiss guy, like me, wrote this tunes. So they call me  “zorro” (fox), what is mining, that I am a smart, intelligent and clever boy. From this I earned my proper cuban nickname “el zorro”, and I decide to use this name for this swiss/cuban joint venture project.

Myriam : Where does your interest in Cuban music stem from?

Martin Richard Lenher : During my studies in music I started to play Latin and Salsa music. And of course sooner or later I discovered the richness in the Cuban music. The Cuban Salsa (called Timba) is full of the Cuban music culture like, Danzon, Son, Guaguanco (cuban rumba), Santeria (religious rhythms). Mixed with new elements of music stiles like, Jazz, Funk, Rock, Pop and Hip Hop. This mix makes the Timba very complex and interesting. I never saw a country with such a high level of understanding in complex music like Cuba. From a baby to a grandma the whole country is dancing to Timba, and Timba (believe me as a musician) is really not a simple piece of music.

Myriam : Which Cuban bands have most influenced you or are still influencing you?

Martin Richard Lenher : In the beginning it was the wonderful band Los Van Van, later the creasy timba-bands La Charanga Habanera and Manolin “El Medico De La Salsa”. Also Paulito F.G. but not only because of the singer Paulito, because of the just two of the greatest arrangers in the cuban music; Juan Manuel Ceruto and Joaquín Betancourt. Finaly I like also Issac Delgado, Manolito, Bamboleo and Maravillas De Florida. At the moment I am not really influenced by a cuban band, but I became a big fan of the band “Guaco” from Venezuela. 

Myriam : Even if we already know quite a lot about your background, tell us about your first meeting with Gustavo Carlos Duran Anaya “ El Buda”.

Martin Richard Lenher : First time when I traveled for 4 weeks to Cuba, I was 2 weeks in Santiago. Every morning I had there some lessons in playing percussion. To not loose my jobs on my trombone (stay in a good condition) practice also on my trombone. And the place was on a terrace. So everybody could here my playing in the neighborhood. 3. morning a cuban trombone player Frankis passed the street to check out, who the hell is playing here. Later Frankis introduced me Gustavo. Both of them Frankis and Gustavo were playing in the symphonic orchestra from Santiago. I spent some nice and interesting times together with Gustavo, and so we became friends.

Myriam : How did you decide to form a band? And to invite famous singers like Mayito Rivera and Angel Bonne?

Martin Richard Lenher : Since 8 years I have a swiss edition from El Zorro. It’s means, I am playing with swiss and cuban musicians (living in Switzerland) mostly here in Switzerland. Last november 2009 the festival “Aqui Cuba” made me a very kind offer to play at your festival and to invite a guest star Angel Bonne. We had a lot of fun to play some concerts with Angel, and we had big success, so we decide to organize some concerts more in july next year 2010. We will play in Switzerland, Poland, Italy and maybe in France again. We will see what the future brings.

Myriam : Where do you find your inspiration for your lyrics? Do you have a preference for certain themes?

Martin Richard Lenher : This is a good questions. I don’t really know it. Sometimes I heard somewhere a text phrase from a song and later I am thinking, oh this could be a nice theme also for a new song. An other story is, I was watching the news on tv, and I saw people fighting because of religions. After that for me it was clear to write a song against this madness. So the song “Para!” originated. Most popular is the theme about love in my songs. The relationship between a man and a woman is still important in everybody’s life.

Myriam : what do you think differentiates your music from the rest?

Martin Richard Lenher : The difference comes from my background. I grow up with all kind of music playing by the radio stations. Switzerland hasn’t really his own music. Okay some yodeling, but in serious forget this. Switzerland isn’t an ethic origin. We are formed from different nations. So, I like to say, that I am not detained in tight corset of special type of music. Most of cuban composers are thinking first in the groove (rhythmical aspect) and secondly about melody and harmony. Think about this, how many world hits had Cuba in the past? Okay you will remember a hand full. Make the same thing with brazilian music, and you will get a lot more favorite melodies. I like to explain, that cubans are very strong in rhythms but not really in melodies. When I am composing music, I am thinking differnent in groove, harmonies and melody at the same time, and maybe this gives me some different results like other cuban bands.

Myriam : How is “El Zorro” perceived in Switzerland?

Martin Richard Lenher : Very, very bad. Unfortunately a « prophet«  has no honour in his own country. I have a lot more success in Italy, Spain, France and Germany. 

Myriam : Will you be going on tour in Europe?

Martin Richard Lenher : Yes I am now in the organization about some concerts in July 2010 again with Angel Bonne. We will play in Switzerland, Poland, Italy and maybe in France again.

Myriam : Is there a fifth CD in preparation and if so, will there be any surprises?

Martin Richard Lenher : Yes there is a 5. CD in preparation, and there will be a bunch of surprises. I’m hoping, that the production will be finished in next summer 2010. I’m sure, that some listener will love the music and some others don’t like it. How can I know that? I know it, because all of the changes in the music they will be in the next CD. Exactly like you wrote in the biography, every new CD is a new step in a new direction. Music must live and music has to change, has to develop, if not, it will be dead.

Myriam : Finally, would you like to pass on a message to your followers in France?

Martin Richard Lenher : Not really a message, but saying thank you all for listening my music…(and of course saying thank you to download it legal on an internet portal or to buy CDs on a shop).
